Big Island Mountain Biking Association’s 12th annual Poker-Run Fun-Ride

Adam invited me to join he and Joe to the 2009 "Kulani Experience". I don't have a mountain bike so he was kind enough to lend me his. I haven't been on a bike since my last race, so this would be fun. Oh yeah, and I haven't gone off-roading since childhood. Being somewhat out of shape and on an outdated, unfamiliar MTB, I opted for the beginner's 7-mile course along the mac-nut farm.

It was cold, wet and foggy. The race started around 11am and I don't even know how long I took. I just know that a few miles in, I started to have some FUN! I felt like a kid again. Just letting go and enjoying the ride.

Since it was a poker run, we collected cards throughout the journey. I had 2 pairs, which was the highest hand. I had first crack at the table of prizes from the Hilo Bike Hub. I went straight for the road bike helmet. Thanks Chris!

I also got to catch up with my buddy Joe while waiting for Adam to finish the advanced course (17.5 miles!). Those are Adam's legs. One was from eating dirt. The other was from his pedal. Ow. Joe's currently fighting fires on the South side right now so I pray that he stays safe out there.
