Action is the Enemy of Thought

Sometimes setbacks like an injury or illness can be beneficial. A simple flu has given me time to think... well, after the brain haze had lifted. Time to study (gotta train the brain too!). Time to put things into perspective. I may not be as strong, quick, agile or have as much stamina as my goals demand, but I know I'm capable under normal circumstances. I have the ability to achieve my fitness goals if I choose to. So what's stopping me?

So when I'm feeling lazy... just laying around watching tv or trolling fb, I'll remind myself of this feeling. This desire to Get Moving, mostly because I'm currently unable to. I'll ask myself what's stopping me... what can i do to overcome it? How do I beat it? Laziness is not an excuse. There's no later on. Get Moving Now!!

Burpee Challenge

We had planned to tackle the Deadman's Burpee Challenge after spin. I tackled Patron the night prior, so punishment was eminent. Spin was all about sprints and I wasn't feeling it. I opted for the lowest gear on the list this round, instead of the usual top gear.

After a much needed 10 minute rest, we were excited about completing the challenge but weren't sure if our bodies were up to it. Only 1 way to find out!

10 minutes. 100 burpees

Then Winona decided this would be an excellent warmup for the real workout. Intense Plyo and obliques sess ensued shortly thereafter.

Back On Track

My buddy Winona, has convinced me to take it easy on the drinking. This past weekend was my birthday, and I pretty much drank for 5 days straight, took a break and had another day. Had a lot of fun, but now it's time to get back on track nutritionally.

  • No processed foods
  • No canned foods
  • No empty calories
    • Added sugars
    • Solid fats
  • No HI-GI carbs for dinner
  • No binge drinking!!!
Never had a problem with soda, rice, or potatoes. I pretty much only have starches for breakfast and lunch. Need to ween off energy drinks and get back to black coffee. 5-6 balanced meals. H2O + banana as soon as I awake. Protein shake for desert. I know what to do, just needed to put it in effect. Started this morning :)

Although I haven't posted much about it, I've been steadily working out everyday for at least a couple hours. Mostly high-intensity (circuit, plyo, spin, run), with some long distance swims.

I'm reposting my long-term dream goals that I have yet to achieve, with renewed focus:

  • lean 185 lbs, <10% body-fat
    • Currently 175 lbs, 12-13%
  • sub-10 hour Ironman
    • Currently 6.5 hours 70.3 IM
    • First full IM scheduled for 2013, sub-12
  • 18 minute 300 workout
    • Currently untested
Can a sub-10 hour IM do a 300 workout? Can I do a sub-10? Can I do an 18 min 300? How will my run/swim change with the added 10lbs of bodyweight?

These are my dream goals. I may not achieve them. If I get anywhere close I'll be happy. I set them so I can be all-around fit and have something high to shoot for. As far as my career, medic is still lingering in my future. I've also put thought into purchasing a house on my own. Always thought it'd be something I'd decide on with my future wifey, but I may as well start working on it. I'll think about location more when I get my permanent station. Plan on having the downpayment by then.

Belated National Running Day Run

Had to save up for a tough circuit during a busy work day yesterday, so I ran this afternoon. Nice easy 5 miler from South Kohala Fire Station to Blue Hawaii on Waikoloa Road and back in 40 mins. Wasn't properly hydrated and had to save my last pair of bebadees for my last day tomorrow, of 72 hours at the station. I found out I shouldn't run too quick bareballs... even in stretchy boardshorts.

I've been invited to join the 40th HFD recruit class for an open ocean swim at Richardson's on Saturday morning. I hope I get a good night's rest Friday night's shift. Cause we're swimming as soon as I get back to Hilo.

Waimanu Day Hike scheduled for early Sunday morning after breakfast at Ken's!

HFD 14B's WOTD

Yesterday was Back, with a light 2 mile jog.

Got our Aquatics Competency Certification today, allowing us to take a dip in the beautiful Pacific. Swimming with bunker gear is surprisingly buoyant, especially if you manage to capture a pocket of air in your jacket. Got more of a tan than a workout there.

Today's Circuit was 3 rounds of:
10 Ring Dips
10 Inverted/Reverse Push-Ups on the Rings
10 Push-Press 115lb
25 Pyramid Push-Ups (1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 with 2 sec rest)
20 Toes/Knees to Bar

First time doing ring dips. Those were sick. Got better on the 3rd round, probably cause I just wanted it over with.

The 115# is a lot for me to press, so I needed the help from the hips.

Toes to bar were pretty killer if I canceled the swing action. Amp it up a little by doing straight-leg toes to bar, then raise up to your knees then pause.

Today was National Running Day. I have to take a raincheck on that.
